Finish Carpentry in Seattle: Trim, Doors and Millwork

Finish carpentry is the part of a house you touch and look at every day: the door that closes with a click, the baseboard that meets the floor without a gap, the stair rail that doesn't wobble.

Pacific West's carpenters do that work across Seattle, in new remodels and in older houses where nothing is square. See our interior remodeling services for everything else inside.

    What we do

    Bedroom with wide-plank wood floors

    Baseboard, casing and crown

    Matching old trim

in Craftsman and early-1900s houses, from stock profiles or milled to match.

    Interior doors

hollow-core swapped for solid, pre-hung or slab, rehung so they swing and latch right. For exterior doors, see the windows and doors page.

    Stairs

treads, risers, handrails, balusters and newel posts repaired or replaced.

    Wainscoting, paneling and beams.

    Built-ins

covered on the cabinets and built-ins page.

    Working in older houses

Old Seattle houses have walls that lean, floors that slope and openings that aren't square. Good trim work hides that. It takes scribing to the wall, shimming jambs and choosing where a gap gets absorbed. We plan it before the first cut so the finished room looks straight even when the house isn't.

Trim usually gets painted afterward, and we can do that too.

    Questions, answered

Can you match the trim in my 1920s house?

Usually. Many profiles are still made. When one isn't, a mill can make a matching knife and run new trim. We bring samples to compare first.

Is it worth replacing hollow-core doors?

If you want quieter rooms and doors that feel solid, yes. Solid-core doors also stop sound much better between bedrooms.

Can you fix a wobbly stair railing?

Usually. Loose railings are often a newel post that was never properly anchored. We fix the anchoring rather than just adding screws.

    Do you take trim-only jobs?

We do carpentry on its own as well as part of remodels.

Why do my trim corners keep opening up?

Mitered inside corners open as wood moves with the seasons. Coped joints stay tight, so that's how we install them.
